Hamworthy United v Ascot United

Hamworthy United 4 Ascot United 1

Hamworthy continued their bright start to the season with an F.A. Cup win over Ascot United from the Hellenic League. However they were probably flattered by their 4-1 margin of victory as the match was in the balance for much of the second half.

The home side’s initial threat came down the left with Carl Preston particularly prominent. Chances were relatively few in the early period but after 21 minutes the Hammers took the lead. A free kick was awarded centrally just outside the penalty area and NATHAN WALKER stepped up to fire low into the corner.

Ascot began to show frustration with the referee’s decision and their yellow card count rose to 4 before the half hour. The second goal came in the 33rd minute when a free kick from the left by Preston was headed home at the far post by BILLY WALKER.

The away side opened the second half brightly as one minute in, Hamworthy lost possession in midfield and the Ascot centre forward, James GOODEY was presented with a clear run on goal slotting the ball past Andy Knights.

For a long period in the 2nd half the match swung to and fro and at times Ascot looked the more likely to score. However the crucial 4th goal of the game went to the home side in the 65th minute. A cross was headed back across goal and Mark FORD put defender and goalkeeper under pressure with the ball ending up in the back of the net.

At this point the game was up for Ascot and towards the end they tired badly on the artificial surface. The scoring was completed in the 86th minute after Ascot full back, Jonny Denton was sent off for a 2nd yellow card. The resulting free kick was fired in low by Preston and NATHAN WALKER side footed home at the near post.

Further chances came and went for Hamworthy but they could afford to be wasteful at this stage.
