Verwood Town v U.S. Portsmouth 27/10/18

Verwood Town 0 U.S. Portsmouth 6

Given the difference in performance during this game, it was difficult to contemplate that the two teams started on level points.

Before Services took a stranglehold on the game with two goals in the 13th and 14th minute, they had shown better application. First Harry POTTER headed in a left wing cross then Lewis BEALE ran onto a long ball, outpaced the Verwood defence, and slotted the ball past Ed Tierney in the home goal.

Verwood’s best chance of the half fell to James Guthrie but his close range effort was just wide. U.S. continued to have the balance of the game and a shot by Harry Sargeant was tipped over by Tierney. Potter also had another header saved before half time. H.T. 0-2

Verwood’s cause was not helped early in the second half as Charlie Heggan was shown a straight red card for a tackle the referee deemed to be serious foul play. Shortly after Services opened up the defence and Josh Hazell was left with an open goal that somehow he managed to blaze too high.

However the next goal was not long coming as Tom JEFFES headed in a corner in the 63rd minute. The game was now being totally dominated by the away side and they went further ahead on 78 minutes when BEALE lashed in an unstoppable shot from 12 yards. A minute later it was five as BEALE completed his hat trick as his shot ricocheted into the net off keeper Tierney.

Finally in stoppage time it was left to substitute, Max DAVIES to complete the rout when he smashed in a shot from the corner of the penalty area.

A bad day for Verwood but Services recovered well from last week’s defeat to Hythe. F.T. 0-6
