Team Solent 3-2 New Milton Town – Sydenhams Football League Div 1 (Wessex)
Att – approx 50 (h/c) .. £4 entry with prog .. no facilities within ground enclosure.
Now the picking of my first game of the Sydenhams Football League had been quite a simple decision back in August, as I set off around the Wessex .. Moneyfields .. simply because my transfusions of blue blood had been running around me for many a year and would always be the preferred option .. than anything red up the other end of the Solent. However as the warm Autumn days turned into cold winter months .. and the grounds were ticked off .. I began to wonder where it was all going to end and how would I feel, especially as I had no real plan of attack .. I might of known .. inside the other City boundary of “you know who, up the road”.
.. and so it was, that I arrived at Test Park tonight generally aware of what was coming .. a clean crisp modern set up .. plenty of new close-boarded fencing .. dark green powder coated railings and two curved covered bus shelters for seating .. just a shame there was no red carpet and a fanfare of trumpets for moi.. as I strolled up to the single turnstile and finally tick off number “36” .. wondering what the final ground of the Wessex would offer as a curtain call.
An absolute cracker .. and that was just the pitch (please can we have one of these flat green surfaces up at Vauxhall Road) .. even before the table topping Students got going and passed the football to death .. going 2 up in ten minutes and absolutely cruising .. with New Milton realising that their young side would need to match up and do the same .. for this was no ordinary Step 6 clash .. this was young heads set free to enjoy themselves, on a surface meant for football .. it was just a shame the third goal came from high altitude, spilled by the visiting keeper, which provided an easy tap in .. and a mistake that would come back to haunt this night .. as the both sides went in to rest up, seeing a 3-0 score line posted at the half.
The Linnets were back out first and surprisingly not looking too punch drunk from their team talk .. setting off on the front foot .. which in time began to take more of a foothold .. and then totally turn the game .. with not one .. but two stunning curlers from either side of the eigthteen yard box .. both finding top corners and leaving everyone wondering .. what was still to come.
.. shear panic for the Students .. especially when another Linnets curler came back off the inside of a post and travelled along the goal line out towards the corner flag .. where further crosses were taken from and hoofed away in any direction .. just adding to this evening’s classic .. eventually won by the League leaders .. who were grateful to shake hands all round .. and me appreciating this fitting finale to those 36 ticks.
Yep, I’ll never forget this Wessex season .. it will live long in the memory .. it’s been a great experience seeing all the Clubs, the friendly welcome and hometown fare .. I wish each and everyone the very best .. and in time .. perhaps you Rams of Petersfield will prevail and step fourth .. never give up you Millers of Totton & Eling .. keep passing that ball to death Students .. and chin up you Vics of East Cowes .. for everyone plays a part in the Sydenhams Football League .. it’s been a pleasure to travel with you all along the Wessex Way ..
