An awful start to the week as the weather washed out six of Tuesday’s scheduled matches. Just one League match lost – the Division One fixture between AFC Stoneham and Romsey Town – and five Cup ties. The Bournemouth Senior Cup semi final at Hythe, Southampton Senior Cup ties at Bashley and Sholing, a Portsmouth Senior Cup tie at Fareham and the North Hants Cup fixture at Alresford.

The two games that were completed were in the latter Competition although there was totally unnecessary confusion over the Andover Town/Andover New Street game with seemingly the correct procedures not being followed, meaning that the game was at one stage “postponed” and then in effect re-instated. Whether it affected the attendance is difficult to judge but there were nearly 150 spectators present to watch New Street overwhelm their local rivals five nil on a first class playing surface with two goals for Shane Lock. In the other tie a perhaps surprise result with Alton winning four one at Tadley Calleva and Matt Bunyan adding two more goals to his rapidly increasing seasons tally for the visitors.

The weather was held to a draw on Wednesday evening with one game postponed and one played. The Division One fixture between Totton & Eling and US Portsmouth was lost to a waterlogged pitch but the Bournemouth Senior Cup Semi Final at Victoria Park went ahead with Bournemouth defeating Lymington by three goals to one. One game on Friday in Division One with Follands making some space between themselves and the bottom of the table with a three two victory over Whitchurch at Hamble – Merson Webb claiming both goals for the visitors in a game that could have gone either way.

Saturday, as expected, was marred by the overnight and early morning rain, with eleven postponements and only eight games played. Fortunately the three Vase games were unscathed and resulted in the certainty of three Sydenhams League sides in Mondays fourth round draw. Baffins Milton Rovers claimed an impressive three one victory at Western League Bradford Town, two goals for Callum Dart, and Dan Mason scored twice in Sholing’s six two defeat of Sussex League Pagham. The third tie between Hamble Club and Hamworthy United finished all square at one all after extra time and they will try again on Tuesday at the Specsavers County Ground. Congratulations to all.

In the Premier Division the games at Andover New Street, Fareham, Horndean, Shaftesbury and Tadley were postponed – more of the last later – leaving three completed. Alresford’s up and down season continued with a four one home defeat at the hands of Bemerton, three very good points for the visitors, with Jordan Matthews claiming a second half hat trick. Cameron Beard scored both goals as Bashley prevented AFC Portchester making ground on the leaders with a two one win in the Forest and Christchurch and Cowes Sports gained a welcome point apiece in a one all draw at Hurn Bridge.

Just two game survived in Division One and welcome wins for two of the Clubs. New Milton ended a long losing run with a deserved two nil victory at Alton while a Jimmi Burton goal gave East Cowes the three points against Ringwood at Beatrice Avenue. None of the games played in either Division had any great effect on the League tables.

Back to the postponement at Tadley- the home Club did everything according to the book, a successful mid-morning pitch inspection, no more rain, Lymington made the long journey to the Berkshire border, the hospitality was in place and the match referee overruled his colleague and called the game off. It would be nice if the FA advised ALL referees EVERYWHERE that they should make every possible effort to get games played!

Now for the Buildbase FA Vase draw on Monday and the wish that there are no all-Wessex ties.
