Round up

The midweek was given over almost entirely to the Wessex League Cup with Team Solent first In action on Monday when they went down three one at home to last season’s runners up Baffins Milton Rovers with Joel Jackson scoring twice for the visitors. Twenty four hours later the holders, Sholing, also moved into the second round with Alex Sawyer scoring twice in their four one victory at Totton and Eling whilst Blackfield & Langley’s Kayne Daysh also scored twice in his side’s six goal defeat of Hythe and Dibden. Division One Clubs Downton and Ringwood Town shared two goals in normal time at Wick Lane before the visitors went through on penalties whilst Whitchurch United gave Shaftesbury something of a fright by leading at half time before going down by the odd goal in five. AFC Portchester went from one side of the County to the other with Steve Ramsey scoring twice in their win at Bournemouth but perhaps the performance of the evening came at Portland where Cameron George notched a hat trick in Amesbury Town’s five two success. In the second round ties Andover New Street scored twice in the final five minutes to defeat Folland Sports and US Portsmouth scored two without reply against Alton. AFC Stoneham pulled off a two one win at Cams Alders as Fareham Town continue to struggle while two goals from Tommy Leigh helped Horndean to victory over Brockenhurst. Andover Town led two nil at Petersfield before being pulled back to two all after ninety minutes and then went out seven six on penalties. Penalty shoot outs have not seen very kind to the Portway Club over recent seasons. The final game saw the scoring accolade for the evening go to Newport’s Jared Wetherick who scored all his side’s goals in the four three defeat of Tadley Calleva with the visitors pushing their Premier Division hosts all the way. Two games in other Competitions saw six goals for Bashley against Bournemouth Manor in the Bournemouth Senior Cup while Lymington Town also scored six against Sway in the Southampton Senior Cup. Four First Round ties scheduled for Wednesday were reduced to two because of Weymouth Reserves withdrawal and floodlight problems at East Cowes.  In the two that were played Division One leaders Christchurch made the long journey to Premier Division Alresford and went down to the only goal of the game, while the all Division One tie between New Milton Town and Laverstock and Ford finished one apiece after 90 minutes with the visitors going through on penalties.

Commiserations and congratulations to AFC Portchester as their FA Cup run ended with a goal in each half giving Truro victory. Commiserations on the defeat but congratulations on the Cup run and the manner in which the Club twice conducted itself on and off the field against much higher ranked opponents. In the League Blackfield and Langley maintained their one hundred per cent record and leadership of the Premier Division with a six goal defeat of fourth place Horndean, Liam Robison leading the way with a hat trick. Lymington Town are second after taking their unbeaten run to five with a two nil victory over Baffins Milton Rovers and Hamworthy United continued their fine form, especially at home, with a two goal defeat of Cowes Sports. There was a setback for Sholing as they went down two one at home to the rapidly improving Brockenhurst and Andover Town found League football much more to their liking than their recent Cup forays, scoring five against Bashley with familiar names on the score sheet –three for Mike Gosney and two for Zach Glasspool. Another hat trick man was Hamble Club’s Nathan Lynch with all his side’s goals in their win at Shaftesbury whilst Portland United picked themselves up after recent losses with a three one win at Alresford. In the lower reaches of the table Fareham Town’s woes continued with defeat by the odd goal in three at Amesbury – two more goals for the home side’s Cameron Roach – while Bemerton Heath Harlequins surrendered a two goal lead at Newport to eventually lose four two. Finally, Team Solent climbed off the bottom with their first win of the season and an emphatic one at that – eight one against Petersfield Town. No scorers sadly available but the visitors will be ruing the missing of the gift wrapped chance presented to them when two nil down.

Laverstock and Ford won for the sixth time in seven games, Robbie Gallagher scoring twice in their victory at Hythe and Dibden that left them heading the table with Christchurch and Romsey Town a point behind. The Dorset Club made it four wins in a row with a four one defeat of Andover New Street at Hurn Bridge while Dan Fox scored twice for Romsey Town at Downton as they stretched their unbeaten run to six. Ringwood Town were the highest scorers in the Division on the day with their seven three defeat of Verwood Town at Potterne Park – a hat trick for River Smith and two for Lee Vint – but the individual goalscoring achievement of the day was at Totton and Eling where New Milton Town’s Steve Flynn scored all the  goals in his side’s four goal victory. At the bottom of the table East Cowes Victoria put up a fight before going down three two to Tadley Calleva – Alex Przespolewski scoring twice for the Vics in his first game – while Folland Sports scored first at Alton only for the home side to score twice and take the points. Fawley AFC, who like Folland Sports, have only the one point, had a rest from the League campaign with a two nil win at Locks Heath in the Southampton Senior Cup and AFC Stoneham proved too strong for Hamble Club Reserves in the same Competition.

But overall it was Blackfield & Langley’s day.
