Weekend Preview – Saturday 07/10/17

On a day entirely devoted to the League Programme two matches stand out in the Premier Division. At the Portway Andover Town, who relinquished their 100% record last week, entertain AFC Portchester who have won their last six matches whilst leaders Blackfield and Langley, who also surrendered their 100% record last Saturday travel, to 5th place Lymington Town who will be looking to get back on track after two defeats. Sholing, in third place, travel to Bournemouth with the Poppies having won their last three matches and there is another tight match in prospect at Five Heads Park where Horndean entertain Hamworthy United. Those four matches feature the top six in the table so there could be a change in the rankings by five o’clock on Saturday. Baffins Milton Rovers, just outside the top six, host an Amesbury Town side badly in need of points whilst Cowes Sports, who have lost their last four, face Shaftesbury who are still somewhat inconsistent and have parted company with their Manager. Fareham Town, having bought their long losing run to an end with a win and draw, entertain a Brockenhurst side that have won four of their last six League fixtures whilst points will be at a premium at Bashley with the home side short of goals and visitors Newport (IOW) sliding down the table after five defeats in six. Two games left with the improving Bemerton Heath Harlequins hosting the equally improving Alresford Town and Portland United, who could also perhaps be labelled inconsistent, making the long journey to bottom Club Petersfield Town.

The top game in Division One is at Hurn Bridge with the meeting of Christchurch and Tadley Calleva. Fourth and third in the table and both sides unbeaten in their last six matches, it promises to be a tight encounter. Both the sides above them in the table are on the road with leaders Laverstock and Ford travelling to bottom Club Verwood Town in a game which in the days when Football Pools were in vogue would have been called a possible “coupon buster”. Meanwhile second place Romsey Town face a difficult task with a trip to US Portsmouth who concede very little on their own ground while two in form sides, Alton and AFC Stoneham meet at Anstey Park. New Milton Town, something of draw specialists, host Andover New Street who are more comfortable on their own ground while two sides short of goals, Hythe and Dibden and Whitchurch United, meet at Claypits. At the lower end of the table East Cowes Victoria, in need of a win, host a Downton side who seem to have lost their early season impetus, Fawley AFC with two straight wins behind them, travel to Totton and Eling and Folland Sports will be hoping to put their midweek problems behind them when they head down the A31 to Ringwood.

Month three of the season under way.
