John Gorman’s weekend preview -17/03/18

Where to start this week is not a problem with the top two in the Premier Division meeting at the County Ground. After 2 wins in the past week, Andover Town are 11 points clear at the top but the leading sides have all played a differing number of games. Hamworthy in second place will have all to play for. Third placed Blackfield & Langley will be looking to put their midweek League Cup defeat behind them when they travel to Petersfield for a fixture that, to some eyes, comes in the “coupon busting” category.

Fourth placed Sholing, who have won their last four and have Lee Wort in goal scoring form, could face a difficult afternoon at Lymington who were perhaps a little unlucky not to get a point out of Andover in midweek. AFC Portchester, League Cup final place assured, entertain Shaftesbury who have acquitted themselves well on their return to this level, sitting comfortably in mid-table. Alresford entertain Bemerton at Arlebury Park and there is a good game in prospect at Horndean where a resurgent Brockenhurst are the visitors.

Baffins and Team Solent meet at Langstone Harbour with both lacking consistency and Cowes, boosted by their midweek win, face the long trip to Portland. Cowes win at Newport leaves the bottom three isolated and both Newport and Amesbury face must win games. Newport are at home to Fareham whilst Amesbury are away to Bashley.

Christchurch are the current leaders of Division One  and, after a comeback win at Ringwood in midweek, they face another local derby at home to Verwood who have picked up lately. Christchurch have dropped only 2 home points all season so the visitors could face a difficult afternoon. New Street have an afternoon off but 3rd place Stoneham face a tricky trip to Romsey who are still in the promotion battle because of games in hand.

U.S. Portsmouth who are unbeaten in six are the Division’s form side but they face the prospect of a hard trip to Fawley who do not give much away at The Waterside. Laverstock cross The Solent to East Cowes whilst Tadley, who have faded recently, will hope to get back to winning ways when they entertain Ringwood. There is a local derby at Claypits as Totton & Eling visit Hythe & Dibden with only one place between them in the table.

Whitchurch, without a win in seven, visit New Milton and Alton face a trip to bottom club, Follands.

All we need now is decent weather and the forecasted snow to wait until after 5 o’clock!
