AFC Stoneham v Romsey Town 04/12/18

AFC Stoneham 4 Romsey Town 0

With one point, one place and a draw in the first game earlier in the season, a close game was expected at Eastleigh on Tuesday night but the reality was far removed from the expectation. Quite simply Romsey were outplayed by a Stoneham side that are full of confidence on the back of a long unbeaten run.

Just after the first whistle they had their first chance when Edu Jimenez was released by a through ball but his shot was wide. Stoneham continued to dominate and even when in possession, Romsey were hustled into mistakes.

The first goal came in the 21st minute as Romsey conceded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Romsey keeper, Charlie Philpott, is not the tallest but it is doubtful if anybody with greater height and reach could have got to Chris MANNING’s free kick which curled into the top corner. The second goal came only two minutes later from a goalmouth scramble. There was some doubt from the side lines as to who had scored but it was Sergio CABALLERO who prodded the ball home.

The third goal came just after the half hour from the penalty spot. Jack Brady was tripped and the ball broke to Caballero who looked as though he would score but by then the referee had pointed to the spot. CABALLERO was not to be denied as he tucked the penalty away. H.T. 3-0

After the half Romsey did come into the game but Stoneham were fully in control and Ben Clarke and Matt Palmer were nearly always on hand to repel attacks. However Luke Eaton was forced to make one good save as he palmed over a Jack Odam shot.

Joe Sutherden had replaced Brady just after the hour and he might have scored twice had he taken on the shot (rather than attempting a pass) when he was well placed. But SUTHERDEN had the final say with 3 minutes to go when he sprinted clear and beat Philpott with a low shot. F.T. 4-0
