Alresford Town v Overton United 23/10/18

Alresford Town 4 Overton United 2

On a surprisingly mild night weatherise at Alton the Wessex League side progressed in the North Hants Cup at the expense of their Hants Premier League opposition though the visitors showed spirited resistance throughout. In the second half with the score at three two and the home side having made a raft of substitutions Overton more than worried their more illustrious hosts until a fourth goal made the game safe.

At this point – and no doubt many will be pleased to read – the normal report ceases. Overton, having played on Saturday, wore their change strip which is fairly dark green throughout with faded pink numbers that are unreadable from any distance greater than ten yards – so recognition was impossible but the names of the goalscorers are correct.

Alresford dominated the first half but were guilty of missing chances apart from the seventeenth minute when Luke Rae scored from the edge of the area leaving the home side ahead at the break. The same player made it two immediately upon the restart before the best goal of the game, a thunderous drive from Christian Cox from twenty five yards reduced the deficit, George Farrelly produced a similar effort to restore the two goal advantage for the home side but Overton came back again with a shot from Alex Jupp that the keeper should perhaps have stopped. The Alresford midfield, following the substitution, had largely gone awol and an equaliser looked a distinct possibility until Rae completed his hat trick, to add to his two goals on Saturday, after Geoff Dunn’s shot had been blocked by keeper Kuddys. And that was game over.

Alresford move in to the next round, Overton can be proud of their efforts but one large downside to the evening. The Competition allows rolling substitutes rather akin to Ice Hockey and there is surely no place for such at this level.
