Bournemouth v Horndean 16/10/18

Bournemouth 1 Horndean 2

Both sides left out usual starters but this game was no less a quality watch for the unbiased spectator and both sides played good attacking football from start to end. In addition the match officials were up to the mark assisting in providing an attractive spectacle.

The game was also punctuated with spectacular goals and the first arrived in the 13th minute when, from a free kick on the left, an unmarked Mitch FROST thundered a header past Sam Reilly in the home goal.

Poppies response was immediate with Mihail Vizitiu firing just over. The equaliser followed in the 19th minute when a weak defensive header fell to Shivan ROUSHBAIANI just outside the penalty area. His shot found the top corner – it was one of those that you knew was in as soon as it left his foot & so did Ross Casey in the Horndean goal who hardly had time to move.

Following his move from Lymington, Casey had a good night showing sound handling and a good command of his penalty area.

H.T. 1-1

The second half continued with the free flowing football. Poppies were more constructive with a shorter passing game. Young full back Aziz Aldhayan was particularly prominent showing good distribution and an outstanding turn of speed when required defensively.

Until the winning goal the best chance fell to Manny Ohameje for Poppies, shortly after his introduction as substitute, but his close range header just went the wrong side of the post.

The decider came with a quarter of an hour left and was a stunning volley from 20 yards by Dan MANUEL. It was a goal worthy of winning any game & was another where the keeper didn’t have time to move.

Poppies will feel hard done by having provided so much to the game. Normally you would say a draw would have been a fair result but this was a cup tie and it was probably fairer to end this way than go to the lottery of penalties. (Roger Allen)
