New Milton Town v AFC Stoneham 24/11/18

New Milton Town 1 AFC Stoneham 2

Third from top against second from bottom, on paper, should have been no contest but this game was anything but. It took two outstanding strikes by Stoneham midfielders to secure the points against a spirited New Milton side.

New Milton started brightly and for the first quarter of an hour they were a match for Stoneham although most of the early chances fell the away side’s way. Jack Brady had the first chance but his shot went high and wide. The closest Stoneham came to scoring as Sergio Caballero’s shot was punched away by keeper, James Mayo.

After the quarter hour Stoneham penned New Milton in defence and the opening goal came on 26 minutes. There was a suspicion of handball in the build up but the finish of Edu JIMENEZ gave Mayo no chance. For the final third of the half New Milton came back into the game and by the end of the half, Stoneham knew they were in a game. H.T. 0-1

New Milton again started brightly in the second period and five minutes in they were back on level terms. The ball came over from the right and Brandon RITCHIE was left unmarked to head in from close range.

On the hour Stoneham sent for reinforcements from the bench and it was one of the substitutes that restored Stoneham’s lead on 66 minutes. The ball fell to Chris MANNING around 25 yards out and he struck an unstoppable volley past Mayo.

From then to the end the chances were shared but neither side could add to the score. F.T. 1-2 (Roger Allen)
