New Milton Town v Fawley AFC 05/01/19

New Milton Town 0 Fawley AFC 2

BITTERLY cold start to 2019 for the two First Division teams at Fawcetts Field. The game ebbed and flowed although perhaps it is fair to say that the Oilers looked to be in charge of the game with an early chance for Tom Munday going over the bar, Dec Hartigan drawing a good stop from James Mayo and Dane Sayce receiving a corner seeing his shot flash just wide. Neither keeper though was really tested in the opening 45 minutes so it was not really a surprise that the teams went in at the break all square at nil nil. The best chance though went Fawley’s way in the final five minutes when a powerful run from Munday won a corner which was not cleared and despite Steve Green’s delivery Hartigan could only pick out Mayo from distance. HT 0-0

Minutes after the resumption, nice interplay from Ben Cooper and Erickson Mukambi produced a sharp cross that was turned round for a corner but the outcome of that failed to trouble the visitors keeper. The almost immediate response saw Fawley have an effort ricochet to safety off the bar. The opening goal came just after the hour mark when Dec HARTIGAN headed the ball home from a Green free kick, looping the ball over Mayo from close to the penalty spot. Fawley doubled their lead around fifteen minutes later when substitute Dan FRY latched on to a poor clearance and cracked home the shot off the far post to make it 0-2.

The visitors came close to making it three but a superb stop from Mayo denied Munday whilst at the other end the Linnets were unlucky not to get on the score sheet with the visitors scrambling the ball away on two occasions as the clock ran down. FT 0-2
