Portland United v Sholing 22/04/19

Portland United 0 Sholing 3

From the kick off the wind played a significant part in the game with Ryan Gosney initially struggling with his kicks. Jamie Beasley was causing problems down the left wing turning the defence on numerous occasions but Ryan Gosney showed why so many strikers have failed to score this season.

At the other end full back Ed Bastick was reading the game well and snubbed out the Sholing attack many times. Both goalkeepers were dealing with the attacks produced and it was always going to be something unusual to beat either keeper. This came in the 40th minute when the ball was played in to Dan Mason but the top striker in the league failed to get a touch instead defender Sam Buckler behind Dan Mason stuck out a foot and looped the ball backwards over the top of stranded goalkeeper Mike Edger for an OWN GOAL to put the Boatmen 1-0 up. The goal lifted the Boatmen and put them on the front foot for the final five minutes of the first half HT: 0-1

Sholing started the 2nd half positively and were quickly looking to double their lead unlike the weather that had suddenly became overcast. With 8 minutes gone Jake Hoole found Alex Sawyer who unleashed a shot past Mike Edgar to give the midfielder his twelfth goal of the season on his return from suspension. Portland continued to look for a way back into the game and thought they had reduced the arrears when defender Sam Buckler meet a corner but saw his header cleared off the line by Owen Royl at the near post on 62 minutes.

At the other end Mike Edgar had to be at his best to thought the Sholing attack with two fine saves. Once again villain of the first half Sam Buckler was looking to make amends for his own goal when he rose above the Sholing defence to head goalwards and followed up when the initial save fell to him again but Ryan Gosney reacted quick enough to prevent the defender opening Portland’s account.

On 68 minutes Brendon King made a double change for Portland with Emmanuel Roche replacing Alex Halloran & Sol Roche replacing Chris Clarke a minute later Sholing had added to their scoreline when Brad Targett found space on the right and drilled the ball past Mike Edgar from a tight angle for his 19th goal of the season. Portland leading scorer Jamie Symes beat Pete Castle to the ball but put his header wide of the goal in the 73rd minute. Brendon King makes his final change with Bailey Rowe replacing Richard Marshallsay with 16 minutes remaining.

Alex Sawyer once again found space on the left and unleashed a shot from 20 yards and had Mike Edgar scrambling to save his shot at the 2nd attempt. Despite being 3 goals adrift Portland continued to search for a goal and Owen Royl made another timely tackle on Jamie Symes to deny the striker only winning a corner which Sholing defence dealt with comfortably. With the clock counting down Dave Diaper gave debuts to Imran Mpaata replacing Jake Hoole on 82 mins then 3 minutes later Josh Carey got his debut replacing Captain Byron Mason. Owen Royl once again denied Portland a goal when skipper Max Buckler shot past Ryan Gosney but Royl got back to make the clearance and keep the 33rd clean sheet intact on 86 mins. Brad Targett picked up a knock and Dave Diaper gave Toby Terry his first team debut then on 93 mins the referee called a halt to an extraordinary season. FT: 0-3
