The Free Sholing Family Day lived up to the clubs expectations with the fireworks provided on the pitch against fellow high flyers Brockenhurst and fizzled out any sparks from the Badgers. Another brace from Dan Mason and a home debut goal for Lee Wort was rounded off by super sub Nick Yeomans was the fire needed to keep the crowd of 464 warm on a chilly day.
Team News: Sholing were without suspended Marvin McLean & skipper Byron Mason. Pete Castle, Barry Mason were missing through injury meant Kev Brewster took over the captains armband. Corey Cherrett & Owen Royl started as fullbacks Alex Sawyer came through a fitness test and bolstered the midfield Lee Wort made his home debut and it allowed Dave Diaper to field a 4-3-3 line up. The bench was youthfull with no one over 18 yrs old also following his impressive displays in the development side Jean-Luc Ramdin was included in the squad.
Sholing looked positive and vibrant from the kick off. Alex Sawyer forced Callum Maher to save his shot on 8 mins. Sholing’s next chance fell to leading scorer Dan Mason but he too was thwarted as he tried to round goalkeeper Callum Maher and with just 10 mins gone on the clock Sholing were clearly showing their intentions following back to back defeats. So it was no surprise 2 mins later that Dan Mason scored from close range from Owen Roundell’s header following Kevin Brewster’s free kick. Jamie Bulpitt was terrorising the Badgers defence with his runs and this was giving Kevin Brewster the space to pick out eith Dan Mason or Lee Wort. Sholing’s persistance was rewarded on 300 mins and to the delight of the 464 crowd watching it was Sholing prolific goal scorer Lee Wort opening his acount on his home debut when he held up the ball twisted and rifled in a low shot past Callum Maher’s upright.
Sholing were well on top and in total control and chances fell to Jamie Bulpitt then Dan Mason, Brock were offering little resistance and with Ryan Gosney a virtual spectator. Brock created their first chance on target after 42 mins but the Sholing defence stood firm and cleared the effort. Sholing should have gone in at half time three up but Dan Miller’s shot was denied by the crossbar on 44 mins.
HT: Sholing 2-0 Brockenhurst
Sholing started the half again positively in the second half with Jamie Bulpitt winning everything in midfield, this gave Alex Sawyer and Zac Mouland the opportunity to distribute the ball well. On 54 mins Lee Wort had the opportunity to double his tally but he hit his shot wide.
On the hour Jamie Bulpitt went into referee Khan’s book for a tackle. However 2 minutes later Sholing’s claim for a penalty were waved away by Khan when Jamie Bulpitt was tripped but Jamie was alert enough to pick himself up and shoot but his effort was held by Maher. On 69 minutes Alex Sawyer was replaced by Kieran Winman. On 73 minutes Dan Miller was once again denied when his effort was cleared off the line. This was followed a minute later with Zac Mouland being replaced by Nick Yeomans the fresh legs kept the pressure on the Brock defence, Brock made their first change on 78 minutes with Noel McCarthy-Gardiner replacing Mitchell Speechley-Price. Seconds after the Brock substitution Sholing put the game beyond them when Lee Wort linked up with Dan Mason who slotted the ball through the legs of the advancing Callum Maher. This was D-Dan’s 19th goal of the season. Having been on the pitch only for nine minutes Nick Yeomans latches onto a pinpoint pass from Lee Wort and drills a great shot in across the advancing Maher to put the Boatman four up. With the game won Dave Diaper introduced 17 year old Jean – Luc Ramdin for his 1st team debut for the final seven minutes.
FT: Sholing 4-0 Brockenhurst
View from the Stands:
To their credit Brockenhurst tried to make a game of it and although they did have success on the flanks, our two young full backs, Correy Cherrett and Owen Royl worked hard and tracked back well, with the ever reliable Dan Miller and developing Owen Roundell covering everything in the centre of defence.
It was also good to be able to have some good humoured banter, which was reciprocated by the referee in respect of how he kept himself warm on what was a very cold day which was felt by all.
Chairman Gerry Roberts said after the game a massive thank you to everyone involved and who came along today. Fantastic turn out. I think everyone had a good time and the boys did the business on the pitch. A big big thank you to Carly for helping organise the day and Dave Bell for spending all afternoon cooking some great hotdogs.
Well done everybody.
