Sholing v QK Southampton 16/10/18

Sholing 11 QK Southampton 0

IT’S been 99 years since the Russell-Cotes Cup competition was conceived and Thornycroft’s (Woolston) FC, a forerunner of the current day Sholing team, were its first winners. Sholing, taking on QK in a cup competition for the second successive week, did even better than their 8-0 win from before. Both sides showed several changes to their starting elevens for this game.

GOAL (4 mins): Wort was adjudged to be onside as he sprinted clear of the defensive line, won a challenge with the advancing QK keeper and had an easy finish (1-0).
GOAL (12): Hoole netted with a deflected shot after a corner was partially knocked out in the middle but into his path (2-0).
GOAL (14): An ominous looking evening for QK brought a further goal when Cuthbertson crossed and Targett reacted the quickest in the middle to take a touch and fire home (3-0).

There were no further first half goals with QK keeper Parker deflecting a Wort effort clear and Woodhall nodding a looping Miller header off the line. On brief QK raids, Reed shot wide and later brought a save from Gosney. Meanwhile, Parker did well to keep out successive efforts by Hoole and Wort, the latter with his foot whilst a Targett shot was well blocked by Gain.

GOAL (48): Sawyer found Wort on the right of the penalty box and he was brought down by Shergold’s challenge; Brewster [pen] stepped up to fire firmly home from the spot (4-0).
GOAL (49): Wort got the ball from the QK keeper, who did well to recover and block the Sholing striker’s first shot but he reacted well to strike firmly and just under the bar (5-0).
GOAL (56): A square ball was played by Hoole to Targett and a good low angled finish into the far corner (6-0).
GOAL (58): Sholing’s fourth goal in ten minutes. Roundell crossed low for Wort to fire in at the far post (7-0).

Sholing made their second change but there was no respite for QK as on came McLean, who once scored the goal to win the club the FA Vase! The sub was straight into the action, Parker denying him with a good block.

GOAL (67): Wort netted his fourth (to equal his haul from a week ago). Having been put clear by a Brewster pass, he sprinted purposely forward and evaded a heavy Parker challenge (the referee playing a good advantage) to go on and slot home (8-0).
GOAL (75): QK sloppily lost the ball and were punished when Wort ran through, Parker saved but it fell loose to Targett to register his first hat-trick for the club with a decent 20-yard finish (9-0).

Tired QK lost the ball again in midfield but Parker once more prevented McLean from adding to the scoresheet …

GOAL (78) … it was a brief respite though! Targett’s pass found Wort who controlled it well and netted his fifth goal of the evening with a vicious shot high into the net (10-0).
GOAL (79): McLean eventually added to the goal tally, QK temporarily blocked his run but he got it back and shot home (11-0).

QK didn’t concede more, but Parker denied Wort and McLean, Wort lobbed over and a Miller header was knocked clear. The ref seemed to spare QK added time!

Thorny’s won the cup twice more (1922 and 1926) and the reformed club’s name has yet been on it but, on this form, it could well be there by the end of this season. It’s back to getting league points for the beleaguered QK boys who, it must be said, played the game in the right spirit. [G Day]
