Team Solent v Baffins Milton Rovers 20/10/18

Team Solent 0 Baffins Milton Rovers 2

TEAM SOLENT looked to build on a good away result from a week ago with a home game against Baffins Milton Rovers. Their line-up however, showed many changes mainly due to unavailability. It was a warm and sunny afternoon which was more fitting of a game played in early August – but who’s complaining!

Solent made a decent opening to the match with Obeng making a strong challenge on a Baffins defender and his 25-yard drive thumped off the goalframe. Baffins went ahead on 11 minutes when a cross from the right wasn’t dealt with in the centre of the home side’s defence and the alert PARISH swept past a defender with comparative ease and shot low past the keeper. That was a disappointing concession from the home side’s perspective and the situation appeared to worsen when Wedlake was upended in the box. Up stepped Ashton Leigh with just 13 minutes played but the Sparks keeper Londors moved across to his right to keep out the spot-kick; it was an excellent save. Undeterred, it was the Baffins team that looked the more likely as the first half progressed as a long-range Tommy Leigh effort went straight at Londors whilst a neat Parish turn saw his shot drift past the post. A further Baffins raid saw Taw find Burns whose low ball into the box just failed to locate Tommy Leigh at the back stick and later Parish played a dangerous ball into the home box which was cleared by Stevens. Taw had a good chance to increase the visitors lead but fired over whilst Kasimu nicked the ball past Baffins keeper Scott but Yates covered well and cleared. HT: 0-1.

Baffins made it two-nil early in the second half when Tommy Leigh crossed from the left and PARISH glanced a header into the far corner for his second goal of the game. Kasimu left a defender floundering with a delightful turn on the half-way line and sprinted towards goal skipping past two further challenges to move in on the keeper but his shot was mishit and went wide. Oh, how Solent could have done with a goal then with most of the second half still to play but it effectively proved to be their final decent opportunity of the game. They plugged away but on the day were unable to find a suitable combination to unlock the visitors defence. Baffins did look the more likely to increase their lead and it was clearly the Solent back line who were the busier of the two defences with centre-backs Davies and Byrne working tirelessly and Londors doing well. Skipper for the day Eaton got in two fine interceptions to deny Taw and Parish whilst, late in the game, Tommy Leigh’s shot rebounded from the bar. Obeng shot narrowly wide for Solent but it just wasn’t happening for them offensively in this game. Right at the very end, Baffins sub Root looked like he was going to increase his side’s lead but Londors, who capped an excellent performance with a great last gasp stop to keep the shot out at close range. FT: 0-2.

Baffins put up an efficient show to win it on the day. With other results taken into consideration, it’s back to the foot of the table for Solent. As usual, a good effort was put in, but an experienced ‘older head’ clearly lacks in their ranks. New pre-season ‘internal rules’ mean no ‘random Joe’ can be signed on anymore making it all very restrictive now.
