Team Solent v Bashley 06/10/18

Team Solent 1 Bashley 2

BASHLEY won a close fought game on a cold, wet and windy afternoon at Test Park. Bash started the better of the two sides and they took an eleventh minute lead when a loose pass out of defence by Solent went to Harrison WHITE whose wind assisted high shot sailed over Solent keeper Morella and into the net from a fair distance. Morella made some good saves to deny efforts from Beard and Dathan whilst visiting keeper Collins denied Solent debutant Mitchell following an Ethan Taylor lay off. A good Taylor run took him to the edge of the Bashley box and his pass found Hammond whose effort was well placed but tipped over by Collins. Solent were getting more into the game and were unlucky when a Penny pass inside found Haji whose 22-yard shot bounced off the bar.

Both Taylor and Mitchell had further efforts wide whilst Bashley, who’d been more subdued as a strike force, suddenly forced Morella to make a fine save to keep out a lunging Beard shot from a Jackson cross. A further Jackson ball in found White who had a good opportunity but fired well wide of the home side’s goal. Near to the break, Taylor was fouled on the edge of the box and his low free-kick got past the Bash wall but came off the base of the post. HT 0-1

There were two goals scored early in the second half. Bash increased their lead when Sam JACKSON took it well on the volley at the far post, but Solent immediately hit back when following a corner that was partially cleared, Taylor laid it back from the right dead ball line to Yasir HAJI who completed a neatly placed high finish from 15-yards. Mitchell had a shot saved low at the near post as Bash kept their lead intact.

A low Clements cross from the right for Bash found Jackson at the far post but his shot from a tight angle came off the post. Back at the other end, Taylor’s lunging header was equalled by a fine parry by Collins. With time getting on, a further Taylor effort was heading towards the near top corner but Collins pushed it over. From another Solent corner Taylor’s shot was cleared off the line by a home defender as Bash held on. FT 1-2

Both teams had dominant spells in the first half, Bash early on and Solent in the latter part. The second half was more of a battle in the conditions and both teams did their best to play football. Either side could have won it with chances created but it is Bash who return across the New Forest with a win. Solent have now become the only winless side in the Premier Division and sit at the bottom of the table. This is a situation they need to remedy in the next few matches. But, to analyse the margin of their losses – six of their nine beatings in all competitions have been by an odd goal – so, not by much perhaps, but defeats nevertheless. (Gary Day)
