Verwood Town v Amesbury Town 20/04/19

Verwood Town 1 Amesbury Town 0

One of the Amesbury Committee was heard to say “Well that didn’t exactly go to plan” and how right he was. Needing only a win to secure the League title and secure a definite promotion, they lost by a single second half goal to mid table Verwood.

Particularly in the first half, Amesbury had the lion’s share of possession and chances. However not only did they face a resolute home defence but also a goalkeeper in Chris Lynch who showed a secure pair of hands and an ability to dominate his penalty area.

After 10 minutes Danny Finnegan had the first chance but he headed over and then in quick succession both Jordan Matthews and Luke Greenway were foiled by an alert Lynch. Next it was Cameron Roach who shot wide from the edge of the area then Jack Vallis headed over from a long throw by Kieran Stephens.

All these chances fell to Amesbury and it took over half an hour for Verwood to create a good chance when Oli Davies’ header from a Nathan Gray cross was comfortably saved by Paddy Creese. Shortly after home striker Alex Eaton was high & wide with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. H.T. 0-0

Amesbury continued to huff and puff throughout the second half but the longer the game went on the less they created. Greatest danger came from set pieces when they were able to use Vallis’ dominance in the air but loose balls all seemed to fall to a Verwood foot or head.

What was to prove the winning goal arrived in the 75th minute. A disputed free kick out on the Verwood left wing was headed in from 8 yards by Charlie GAJIC.

As Amesbury pushed forward in vain to find an equaliser, Verwood were able to exploit greater space and in the end they were able to see the game through without any alarms. F.T. 1-0 (Roger Allen)
