FA CUP PREVIEW

August 5, 2022

Despite it being for many Leagues the first Saturday of the season, it is also the Extra Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup which involves all our Premier Division Clubs and three from the First Division so a much restricted Wessex League programme.

The Cup involves five all-Wessex ties and thirteen in which opposition from surrounding Leagues are involved. In the “local” matches Alresford take on newly promoted Laverstock & Ford and the result could go either way while Hamble Club cross to Cowes Sports where a home win is a possibility.

Christchurch were drawn at home to Blackfield & Langley but with cricket tasking precedence at Hurn Bridge the game has been switched to the Waterside which may not concern Christchurch after their win in midweek.

An interesting tie at Cams Alders where Fareham entertain Hythe & Dibden. The latter only just avoided relegation last season and have seemingly strengthened their side but the home fire power may prevail on the day.

Lastly the other promoted side, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, will face Moneyfields at Moon Park, in a switch due to the ongoing work to the ground at Dover Road. Bemerton will, hold their own at the higher level but this is a very difficult game with which to start the season.

Two of the remaining ties see Clubs who left the League at the end of last season are returning to Wessex soil. Promoted Bashley cross to AFC Stoneham for what could be a close encounter while Alton, now in the Combined Counties South, head south to Baffins Milton Rovers; with the game being played on Friday evening, and will be hoping to get a result.

Bournemouth, despite their midweek win, may struggle when they travel to Westbury United who, like Bashley, were promoted to the Southern League in the close season.

AFC Portchester head to Wiltshire and should be too strong for Hellenic League Corsham Town while Horndean have an away tie at former Wessex League Club Thatcham Town and could well get a favourable result.

Brockenhurst venture to Surrey and Badshot Lea near Farnham while Camberley Town go in the other direction to meet Shaftesbury. Could well be two Wessex League victories. Portland United were initially drawn away to Lymington Town but again cricket takes precedence and the game will be played at Portland, increasing the home side’s chances though victory will still be difficult.

League new boys Pagham face Erith Town from Kent and on last seasons form the sides look equally matched but US Portsmouth could have a difficult afternoon at Welton Rovers, newly promoted to Division One of the Western League.

The three Division One Clubs included in the draw all face away ties. Follands probably have the most difficult tie with a trip to the picturesque ground of Southern League Larkhall, near Bath, while both Andover New Street and Newport, both having scored four in the week, face former Wessex League opposition.

Street travel to Warminster with both Clubs having missed out on promotion in the play offs while Newport go to Fleet Town. Both matches are winnable but the Island side probably has the better chance.

With three Clubs on the road to Wembley, Division One is reduced to eight matches and, in alphabetical order, new boys Hamworthy Recreation have a tough opener with a visit to Andover Town who give little away at the Portway. Ash United and Fleetlands both have the benefit of having played on Tuesday when both conceded four and home advantage may prove decisive.

Amesbury Town start life in Division One with a trip to East Cowes Vics and will be hopeful of a result while New Milton Town entertain Millbrook. The home side can be very good on their day whilst Millbrook fell away last season after a good start and a home win must be a possibility.

Downton, favoured by many to do well this season, make the cross-country journey to Petersfield Town and could come out on top in a low scoring game and Fleet Spurs are another with a lengthy journey as they head for Ringwood Town. The visitors must have a better start this campaign without having to play so many early fixtures away from home and will recall that they won the corresponding fixture last time round.

Something of a local derby as Romsey welcome Totton & Eling with the hosts likely to come out on top while Whitchurch United complete the set with a trip to Verwood Town and perhaps a sharing of the points.

AUGUST 6 - FIXTURES

AFC Portchester have received a home draw against Aldershot Town in the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup. Gav Spurway's table-toppers are in a quest to make it back-to-back victories in the competition, will face the National League outfit - who saw off Tadley Calleva 6-1 to reach the last four. Portchester's path meanwhile has already included triumphs against opposition higher in the pyramid in Basingstoke and Havant & Waterlooville. There's further Velocity Wessex League representation in the other semi-final, with AFC Stoneham visiting either Hamble Club or Sholing. Hamble overcame Southampton's Academy 2-0 in the second round, while fellow Premier Division title-challengers, AFC Stoneham beat Winchester City by the odd goal of three to make this stage. Ties for those semi-finals are to be confirmed, however The Snows Stadium - home to AFC Totton - will host the final on Tuesday, April 15 (7.45pm). See our Fixtures page for updates. Andover New Street's march in the Isuzu FA Vase continued on Saturday in a thrilling all-Velocity Wessex League last 16 encounter against AFC Stoneham. A crowds of 565 at Foxcotte Park saw Oliver Jenkins give Stoneham the lead on the quarter-hour - and that's how it stayed until late drama ensued; Greg Peel finding the target to level for New Street - three minutes into added time.

Andover New Street have been reinstated into the Isuzu FA Vase (*subject to appeal) after Roman Glass St George fielded an ineligible player during their Fourth Round tie on January 11. An FA National League System board sub-committee met on Thursday, revealing that Roman Glass St George had fielded a player under suspension. Subject to Roman Glass St George's right to appeal, Street will host an all-Wessex tie in the last 16 of the competition - a record for both sides - on February 1, guaranteeing one a place in the quarter-finals. As we come to the end of my first six months as the chair of the Velocity Wessex League, it is time to reflect on the season 2024-25 so far. The weather has been kind to us so far and most clubs have completed close to half of their league programme. Both the Premier Division and Division One have competitive battles at both the top and bottom of the tables and I am sure that the race for the title and play-off positions will be interesting right up to the final games. Special congratulations are offered to the three teams that remain in the FA Vase, namely AFC Stoneham, Andover New Street and Fareham Town. Whilst they all face difficult away ties on January 11, everyone in the League wishes them well and hope they can carry the Velocity Wessex League flag into the next round. Off the field, focus for clubs will have to be achieving FA ground accreditation by March 31, 2025. There is the threat of relegation for clubs that do not achieve accreditation, and the league do not want to lose any club on this basis, so please can I ask clubs to focus on getting the required work finished in good time so that promotion and relegation is only decided as it should be, on the field. If you require any assistance regarding ground accreditation, please do not hesitate to contact Ian Harley or myself. As we reach the end of 2024, I would like to thank my fellow league officers for the work they do on behalf of the league, and the time spent and knowledge they have to offer clubs does not go unnoticed. I would particularly like to thank the league secretary Steve Smith for his work and dedication to the role, and he has helped make my transition into the Chairman’s role go smoothly. As I thank the officers, I would like to pay tribute to the League President Dennis Challis who sadly passed away following a short illness recently. Dennis was a font of knowledge and support for me, and our thoughts are with his wife Val and his family at this time. I also thank and acknowledge the support of Joe, Will and the team at Velocity Sports, our main sponsor. Without their financial backing it would make running the league harder for both the league officers and clubs. I would also like to thank all club officers and volunteers for the work that they do to keep all clubs functioning to the standard required of a club within the FA’s National League System, it is appreciated. Finally, I would like to wish everyone in the Velocity Wessex League 'family' a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2025. Nick Taplin Chairman Velocity Wessex League
